General Program

The Club Sailing Program for the next year commences late April with club events starting promptly at 10:30 AM last race to finish before 2:30 pm

Sailing will be conducted at Woorabinda Lake, Mabel St Stirling

Sailing every Wednesday with handicap racing on the last Wed of the month and Championship Racing on the other days. The club also runs a match racing event in early December and an Interclub event late September. We break for Christmas for 3 weeks.

Social sailing is available to members every Sunday morning 8.00 to 12.00am

All state events can be seen on the SARYA web site

Wow!. It was a day to remember. One that meant a choice of sail was or should have been a " B " rig ,but "she'll be right " and "Gung ho" ,an "A" rig was the name of the game. It was blowing a gale at the lake and Mal and Ben deserve 1st prize for their duo knockdowns which were precise and graceful like a synchronised ballet movements. .Dave N shredded his jib which is beyond repair and Dave K also had problems with his jib and retired. Although the day was entertaining to watch, it was freezing with a wind chill factor of 5 degrees, but we persevered and completed 12 races in all. By 2 o'clock we called it a day and retired to the warmth of our heated cars and then home.

Welcome to another new member Jeremy Lawson, who turned up with a newly purchased Marblehead sail #51. We helped him ring up his boat then launch his boat into the lake and away he sailed. Well done John!

Seven boats lined up at Woorabinda Lake for what turned into one of the trickier days on the calendar this season. The breeze was barely there from the first race — a light, shifty zephyr that drifted around the lake without ever committing to a direction, leaving skippers hunting for pressure rather than racing tactics. It was there and then it wasn't. Lots of great friendly banter kept the morning equally enjoyable.

With the wind refusing to settle, the racing was tight and unpredictable — big leads evaporated in the flat patches, and boats that had dropped back found themselves back in touch on the next puff. Starts mattered less than usual; reading the next patch of tiny ripple across the lake mattered a great deal more, and more than one skipper was left drifting in irons waiting for something, anything, to fill in.and even the breeze bending to lift Rob on a great tack to overtake boats close to the reeds who had to tack out, ...but then in a likely turn of events, ended up parking before the last mark with weed on his keel. ;)

Thanks to everyone who came down to Woorabinda and helped run the racing. Especially David Knight postponing his usual high performance RC racing to volunteer running the BBQ for a lovely warm lunch. (Thanks to the report by Paul (Bullley and congratulations on a great day!)

A blustery day on the lake today as out of control nosedives and lay downs in the big bullets coming through made for exciting sailing. Westerlies meant running starts but there was less carnage between boats than might have been expected. Malcolm came to help set up and Steve turned up a bit later, but neither sailed due to back issues - we all hope they're "back" next week for handicap day. Dave Knights and John Lykke dominated most of the races showing the benefit of experience in the very challenging conditions. Dave Larritt showed good form and his boat and Geoff Worsley's boat both relished the strong conditions.

After ten races enthusiasm and the fleet started to wane with only four boats in race 11 and guaranteed podium finish for the three boats to contest the final race. Some of us hope for more moderate conditions next week for handicap day and less weed would be good! (Report by Rob thanks)

The lake is filled to the brim and looked very refreshing, but no one volunteered to swim out and clear the weed. We had good breeze for most of the races but very fickle (as usual!) making for snakes and ladders racing. It was great to have the club boat out and very ably sailed by Paul Bulley making a fleet of eight and all very gregarious with congested and contested mark roundings and much banter. In all we managed ten races and fortunately there was minimum rain after lunch having made the courageous decision to put the shelter away early. Everyone looks forward to warmer spring weather (with sun and wind!) and the return of our beloved commodore and treasurer which could make for ten or more boats on the water.

A bleak and dank day on the lake today but a good turn out considering inclement conditions. Six boats initially and Wayne joined us to make seven from race 3. There was little wind (albeit occasional good puffs) and plenty of stringy green weed and snags. Bring wetsuits next week for an early start clearing the debris! We just managed two races before morning tea and John dominated reading the conditions well and avoiding hooking too many nasties.

After morning tea fickle wind made for testing times and a couple of boats pulled out after lunch. Rod had some excellent starts and good legs at times and will be a worry when he strings it all together. Six boats contended for the last couple of races but only three finishers for the last race. Week 6 of the Ice Breaker Series with the temperature at 5 degrees. 9 sailors for today's outing with light conditions again. Geoff and Rod our newest members are coming along well improving every week and coming to grips with the lake's inconsistencies with Rod taking his first win in Race 5 and Geoff coming 3rd in Race 3. Ben had assisted Geoff with his sail settings in our break which attributed to a great improvement. Thanks Ben. Lunch with the BBQ under the marquee was a highlight with a double purpose as we gathered around and kept warm while we stopped for lunch. Thanks Dave K. Hopefully next week .... who knows what the weather will bring.

A few showers through out the morning with very light winds. After lunch some wind sprang up for a while then back to light winds. Rob Last sailed well today winning 2 races & 3 seconds. The addition of an extra bearing to his swing ring mast and the replacement of his winch {Stinger} & rudder servo improved the performance of his boat.

Week 4 of the Ice Breaker Series. 6 degrees and the wind gods have deserted us. This is the 4th week with no wind above 2 knots. So with a lot of male bonding in more than the timed breaks allowed, Rob was helped with a new rudder servo installation over morning tea. Malcolm just happened to have one in his car. Only 1 race between morning tea and then lunch break. More bonding as the repair of the marquee proceeded with much haste and it is all fixed now. Maybe next week we will have better luck with the wind conditions.

Week 3 of The Icebreaker Series. The temperature was 8 degrees and the lake was full of water from the recent rains. What a sight! 12 yachts sailing on the lake, with desperate starts for the advantage of clean air which was only 2 knots from the North North-West. But that's the name of the game. Good starts are critical.
With 5 yachts retiring half way through the day the last 8 had some good close racing.

This was 11 of the 13 yachts there at sometime during the day!

Race week 2 of the Ice Breaker Series temperature 5 degrees, racing abandoned as the weather conditions became to dangerous for sailing. Thunderstorms and heavy rain made it impossible .

Race week 1 of the Ice Breaker Series temperature 3 degrees. What enthusiasm with 9 skippers weathering the cold start. A hot lunch was welcomed with our Bistro Chef making hamburgers. Thanks Dave K. Handicapping went to plan with all enjoying the day.

It was a good day with 8 boats on the water.

Rod Wenham tried out his new acquired boat sail # 89.after we set it up with a 'B' rig and a long keel. He was happy cruising around the lake getting used to controlling the boat. Dave helped launch our boats all day, unfortunately his water boots sprung a leak which made it a bit uncomfortable for him. Maybe we should get him or the club a new pair?.

Good to see No 95 out of moth-balls and back on the lake (Race 1 and 2 only then 68).. It was only for a short test spin but it did bring back memories. The day was cold and wet and the rescue dingy was in high demand. This is a report from a none participating skipper on the day so this content is hearsay only.

We all welcomed our newest member Geoff and his Indie Sail no 52 which he has just purchased to the club. Mal did some final prep with Geoff before they started competing at Race 2. Mal's 2 week's holiday, has obviously really revived him because he blitzed the day winning 7 of the 10 races. Our AGM at the Bridgewater Hotel was a great success and all those that were there had a good time. It's handicap week next week with a BBQ for lunch. All membership fees are now due and payable for those that haven't done so.

The day was quite the wind was patchy on the lake you either got it or you missed out and left behind. We started late as several boats had electrical problems and were calling out for Malcolm looking for his expertise., We welcomed new member Allan to the club who ran aground due the fact Woorabinda water level is low and only has a long keel with his purchase so through attrition we where left with 3 boats so if you were last you were guaranteed at least third. We hope week next brings more boats out on the water.

Dave and Steve had an early start setting up the marquee because the forecast was for rain. We all set off racing with 2 to 3 knots and lulls of 0 knots. The morning was slow amidst drizzling rain.
At morning tea break the rain came down and the breeze filled in. Then it was go go go for the rest of the day. Heavy showers on and off but the marquee saved the day. Don't forget the AGM on May 21st at 6pm at the Bridgewater Hotel. We need all the numbers by next Wednesday.
