General Program

The Club Sailing Program for the next year commences late April with club events starting promptly at 10:30 AM last race to finish before 2:30 pm

Sailing will be conducted at Woorabinda Lake, Mabel St Stirling

Sailing every Wednesday with handicap racing on the last Wed of the month and Championship Racing on the other days. The club also runs a match racing event in early December and an Interclub event late September. We break for Christmas for 3 weeks.

Social sailing is available to members every Sunday morning 8.00 to 12.00am

All state events can be seen on the SARYA web site

The day was fairly uneventful for sailing except for the boats with long keels. The weeds in the lake are causing problems for them as the water recedes. We are heading for the same situation as last year because of the lack of rain. The rescue boat was on hand to save the day but has now gone to the workshop for repairs. Thanks Ben (all done - loose connections all fixed). But we are not letting conditions deter us. 10 races are proof of that. See you all next week.

If you look closely at the score sheet for this week, you will notice that there were 3 winners. But this does not reflect the sailing quality and ability of all the sailors. The day's racing consisted of close finishes and fierce competition making for an exciting and satisfying experience for all. Well done everyone. (Please note Dave N used yacht 64 for the last 4 races)

I am not going to mention the weather, the groundings, or the fact that we had only finished 1 race by the morning break. Oops so sorry but I just did. Well that is what happened with only 1 retired for the day. John had issues with his sheets.

So many groundings of yachts today as the lake levels are on the way down. The long keels made it hard work for our Rescue Boat to keep up with the demand to free them from the mud. Perfect conditions for sailing before the lunch break but the afternoon brought increasing windy conditions making it difficult to control the yachts with short keels. They endured lots of knock downs and submerging bows. Too late for a change of rigs and sails so we just sailed on.

The wind today was gusty and constantly changing directions making it very challenging conditions. Adding to the mix the wind was very cold as most of us were dressed for a normal warm summers day. Next week is barbecue day.

Our first sail for 2026 got off to an eventful start with Ben taking a "quick dip" in the lake to mark the occasion. During the Christmas break, the club boat received a lot of TLC thanks to Ben. New sails and new sheets with the proof of his efforts showing in the results after Ben put it through its paces. As far as the rest of us went, we struggled with sail setting, trying to get the best out of our rigs to cope with the variable wind conditions which went every way but the right way. A good start to the year though for the mental focus that was required to see the day out. Very challenging!

The day's racing started like most other days with the first race taking 40mins to complete. A nice relaxing pace. But it became an exciting day for Duncan who managed to lead the field by almost half the course in race 7. The excitement ended up getting the better of him making him loose focus which saw him go right instead of left and into the reeds. Bad luck Duncan but a great effort. A booking for 10 has been confirmed for the Club's Christmas Breakup Lunch at the Bridgewater Hotel at 12.00 on the 17th December. Anyone that hasn't confirmed and would like to attend, ring and add to the booking. See you all there.

Stronger winds that were not projected by BOM surprised us, however it was good to sail in those conditions.

We managed 14 races even though we started 20 minutes late and finished 20 minutes early.

Another good day of sailing. With a forecast of strong and gusty wind half of the fleet rigged their boats with B rigs and long keels. This paid off as those skippers comfortable handle the conditions and finished in the top group of sailors for the day.

A good breeze today which allowed us to complete 12 races. All boats were in the mix making close group racing. A fun competition day.

An enjoyable day of sailing. The sun was shining. It was a little fresh first thing in the morning however it warmed up later in the day. We had two boat in the afternoon had to replace batteries one just in time the other we had to call on Rob to recover using the dingy. Thanks Rob.

Today we had 2 races happening within the same race, because Duncan and Dave L were battling with each other in their own competition for most of the day. At the same time the rest of the skippers were fighting it out between themselves. We had pretty good wind conditions making for a good day's racing.It is heading for that time of the year where we begin thinking about our Christmas Breakup Lunch. So the Bridgewater Hotel has been tentatively booked on December 17th at 12.00 noon. It has been booked for 12 members so check your diaries, pen it in and let Steve or Malcolm know if it is a go for you.

Handicap Day always seems to bring out the best performances from all sailors, with lots of challenges and healthy competition. All in all a very pleasant day of sailing with 5 different skippers taking line honours. And with hot dogs for lunch who could ask for anything more. It was an enjoyable day sailing. Dave Nicolson sailed really well all day. He was in 3rd place for the first 6 races then finish up winning the last 2 races. Ben sailed Mal's boat in first 3 races as he left his sails in Goolwa!! This gave Mal a chance to assist Duncan. Thanks Mal

What a "wild" day it was with conditions that had to be seen to be believed. With only 4 skippers brave enough to sail, we decided to call it a day after only 8 races because of the hazardous conditions. With Steve in the reeds and Mal caught on a buoy it was too risky to bring out the dingy, so it became a waiting game until they were free and sailing again. 2 skippers decided to retire and so there was only 2 left to sail on. It was really the perfect day to only sit under the marquee chatting and sipping a coffee. Better luck next week.

Spring is here with the temperature in double digits at the start of the day and almost the same for the number of skippers. The day looked very promising. But for Rob it became a bit of a disaster missing buoy after buoy and hitting the last two markers more than once. Dave N excelled again with 3 wins and a supply of hot dogs for lunch. Thanks Dave. Duncan made a return on his "chariot" (goffer and trailer) all decked out for racing. On the water his red sails blazed in the distance for all to see. See you all next week for another challenge.

A dearth of stalwarts resulted in only four boats for the first four races. A surprise guest appearance from someone generally seen at the BBQ on handicap day swelled the Daves to three and boats to five. Always challenging conditions on the lake and a dense and powerful west to NW breeze to 15 knots saw spectacular carnage at times while fickle light patches gave everyone a fighting chance for glory. Eleven races were sailed but only three boats for the last race. John and Dave Nicolson sailed particularly well and Dave Larritt is becoming a serious competitor now the boat is behaving. A great day on the water.

Light winds from the NE made sailing tricky with changing directions however it was a good day sailing except for lots of reeds catching most of us a few times during the day.

Almost double digits temperature wise for our start this morning. But probably a little too soon to say that the "Ice Breaker Series " is over. David L has finally sorted out all the problems with his yacht and sailed trouble free all day. We welcomed Duncan back this week and he arrived in his red "chariot" ready to take us all on. He sailed the club boat and it was good to see that he is still on the team giving it a go. Well done! And a great effort everyone for sorting out the club boat for him. It was good to enjoy a day with mild conditions. No rain, no blustering winds, warmer temperatures and even a bit of sunshine.

Week 6 of the "Icebreaker Series" brought with it a more pleasant 7 degree start to the day. But it failed to bring any sort of breeze making it a very slow sailing day. Race 1 took ages to complete and it was the same for race 2. So we called for an early morning tea break in the hope that conditions might improve. David L was still having problems with his boat which weren't resolved as the day progressed. Hopefully he will be able to get to the bottom of things by next week. We only completed 6 races and so decided to call it a day. Next week things can only get better.

We are into week 5 of the "Icebreaker Series ". Well named because it was still a 5 degree start. Cold! But what else would we want to do other than go sailing. As mentioned last week, the competition was fierce.Today 6 different skippers came across the line in first place. Well done every one. Excellent handicapping! Ben spent most of the morning helping sort out problems with David L 's yacht. When it was back on the water it showed that it is going to be a contender with some good speed throughout the afternoon's races. Thanks Ben.

And Thank you too David K for the great chicken burgers that you cooked for lunch. It was a welcomed treat for us all on such a cold day.

Week 4 of the "Ice Breaker " Series brought with it a temperature of 5 degrees. So it is getting warmer. Every week you can feel the enthusiasm growing amongst all the skippers, with close racing and close finishes. The competition is so strong and you can see a real improvement in everyone's sailing ability. Today the conditions were extremely difficult as the breezes were inconsistent all day. Next week is handicap day with a hot lunch.

We could hardly see the lake or the far buoys because of the thick layer of fog when we arrived at the lake this morning. We started on time and by 10.30 the fog had cleared. Conditions were dicey with intermittent breezes and lots of down drafts causing the short keeled yachts to be totally out of control. David L still had a problem with his transmitter, but led the fleet in numerous races. He is certain it will be fixed by next week.

Wed Jul 9 racing abandoned

Week two of the "Icebreaker Series", brought with it severe wintery conditions. After arriving at the lake, the heavy rains and biting cold made it easy to come to the decision to cancel the day's racing. Dave N and Steve, notified other sailors of the cancellation, citing hazardous conditions rendering the lake too treacherous for use. Hopefully we will return to kinder weather next week. See you all then.

It was 3 degrees this morning so we are calling today's event "The first race of the Icebreaker Series". Though the sun was shining, the breeze was like a knife cutting through us. But as true sailors we sailed on. After lunch the breeze became quite still and the sun warmed us up. The day's racing was very competitive with close finishes and all enjoyed the day. Good to see David L get a third in race 5 and to be competitive through many of the races.

It was great to see that the lake level had risen enough so that no waders were required for launching or retrieving any yachts. Even the yachts with long keels had no problems. A stiff breeze all day achieved 13 races and a BBQ. Well done all. Thanks Dave K for organising lunch every handicap day. It is very much appreciated by everyone. Well done Rob!!

It was a great turnout today with a fleet of 9 yachts on the starting line. Rob tried to start, but again there was no control of the mainsheet, the same problem as the last two weeks. Mal had a look at Rob's boat and seemed to solve the issue by bypassing the on/off switch. The level of the lake has finally risen (but only by 50mm) but we are still in need of David N's help, launching and retrieving the boats. Thank you Dave for the great job you are doing. Next week is handicap day with a BBQ for lunch.

There was a late start because David L was still having issues with his F5. Ben and Mal tried to sort it out but with no luck. So back to the drawing board. David L. sailed the club boat after lunch and managed to get a few races in by the end of the day. Very light breezes made "races" take a long time to complete and we only managed 7 races in all for the day.

The AGM was a good night with everyone enjoying the meal and the company. Even though we had rain in the last week, it made little difference to the level of water in the lake. Dave N, with waders on, came to the rescue of 3 boats stuck in the mud. It was a bit of a "Domino" affect with 1 boat getting stuck, another getting stuck trying to help and then another getting stuck trying to help the other 2. Dave L. started well but had to withdraw due to possible battery issues. The day was freezing, so Winter is definitely upon us, but we all had a good time with 11 races in all.

What an enjoyable day we all had handicap racing, with 6 skippers going at their best to improve their position on the ranking for each race. The opportunity also arose for some to start in 7th, 8th or 9th position and make their way to the front of the fleet. This became a real challenge for them. Coming 3rd in race 6 was a highlight for David L and he was rapped.But this didn't last long because he ended up in the reeds towards the end of the day. So out came the dingy for a rescue. And at the same time we were able to organise the submerged tree limb problem to an extent. Thanks to David N for a great lunch. The hot hot dogs were very welcome on such a cold day. Sailing on the lake these days is pretty challenging. It's like a box of chocolates "you never know what you are going to get". Notwithstanding the weather conditions, and the lack of water in the lake, the submerged tree branches have created a real headache for us. At least 5 yachts got caught on them with 1 yacht unfortunately getting caught 4 times in 1 race. All these problems will disappear when we get some rain. Numbers for the AGM have been finalised and we can look forward to a good night on May 29th at 6.00pm at the Bridgewater Hotel.

David L our latest member arrived with his newly purchased F5 full of enthusiasm and raring to go. John was again our good Samaritan working with waders on launching and retrieving our boats from the lake which is still in desperate need of some rain. Thank you John. There hasn't been a day when we have a constant breeze lately. It seems to come and go. Next week final numbers are required for our AGM on the 29th May 6.00pm at the Bridgewater Hotel.
